Are American Workers Overworked?

Do American workers work more than they should? Compared to many other countries, this seems to be the case. From work-life balance to paid time off many employees have been put in the position that they are living to work, when they should be working to live.

Not all of the jobs in the United States require every waking minute of your life, but some employers think that they have control of you 24 hours a day. When looking for the right job don’t settle for mediocre. There are employers out there that treat their employees with respect. They understand that by treating their employees right, they will, in turn, have happier more dedicated employees.

Things to Consider Before Accepting a Position

Deciding to take a position can be a stressful decision, but it’s important that you take into consideration the things that are going to make you happy and improve your life.

  • Work-Life Balance
    Family should be your number one priority. You need to spend time with them, but you also need to be able to provide for them. It is estimated that in the 1920s only 20% of mothers worked outside of the home. Today, more than 70% of children are being raised in homes where both parents work. Many children come home to an empty house and don’t see their parents until hours later.

    If you have a family, you need to decide what the appropriate amount of time you should be working, compared to the amount you are spending with your loved ones.
  • Hours
    A typical full-time job in the United States is 40 hours a week, but the number of hours can vary depending on your employer. Many jobs require you to work overtime if needed, and the United States hasn’t put a limit on the number of hours that an employer can you work. Numerous other countries have adopted a full-time week as 35 hours or 6 hours a day.
  • Paid Vacation Days
    Many countries have at least four weeks of mandatory paid vacation time. The United States doesn’t require employers to offer their employees any paid time off. Even though it is not required many companies to offer some paid vacation days. Many places of employment only give their employees one week of paid vacation.
  • Sick Days
    Having paid sick days are something to think about when taking a new job. Unfortunately, many businesses do not offer paid sick days, and it is not required by the government. Many people end up going to work sick because they cannot afford to take time off, and in turn, they get others sick. They also fear that they will be fired if they call off.
  • Health Insurance
    The cost of purchasing private health insurance can be astronomical. Large companies are now required to offer their employees health insurance, but small companies still do not have to. Just because an employer states that they offer Health Insurance doesn’t mean that it is affordable. Finding an employer that pays a large percentage of the premium is a plus when looking for a job, but they are becoming harder to find.

If you can find a job that you love and are treated right you are fortunate. Many Americans are forced to work stressful jobs just to survive. They do not have time to spend with their families or are able to enjoy life in general. There are great jobs available, you just have to be patient and find the one that is the perfect fit for you.
